THOU ART THE POTTER;

Dawn reflections….
8/25/10
As Ron and I have been preparing for our vacation, I pulled out a few books and magazines to take with us so I can catch up on some reading. On Monday, I went with Ron to Austin for his cardiac tests. Knowing that I would be spending a lot of the time waiting, I decided to get a head start on my vacation reading and took one of the books with me. The book? One that a colleague/friend gave to me as I was preparing to graduate from seminary. I haven’t had time to read it so I decided to take the time now. The name of the book is “Sabbath: Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in our Busy Lives” by Wayne Muller. The irony isn’t lost to me.
The day after preaching a sermon on being “In Rhythm With God”, I began reading this book on taking sabbath rest. I had to chuckle a little as I opened the book and found these words right there on page 1: “In the relentless busyness of modern life, we have lost the rhythm between work and rest. All life requires a rhythm of rest. There is a rhythm in our waking activity and body’s need for sleep. There is a rhythm in the way day dissolves into night, and night into morning. There is a rhythm as the active growth of spring and summer is quieted by the necessary dormancy of fall and winter. There is a tidal rhythm, a deep, eternal conversation between the land and the great sea. In our bodies, the heart perceptibly rests after each life-giving beat; the lungs rest between the exhale and the inhale. We have lost this essential rhythm . . . Because we do not rest, we lose our way.”
I kept reading. The author talks about how we do violence to our bodies, our minds, our relationships when we don’t take sabbath rest. We were meant to take time for rest. Without the needed rest, we start operating out of survival mode. A few pages into the book, I read “Sabbath is a way of being in time where we remember who we are, remember what we know, and taste the gifts of spirit and eternity.”
Ron and I are taking some accumulated time of sabbath rest so that we can remember who we are, what we know, and taste the gifts of God’s eternal Spirit in our lives. As we’re called to remember the Sabbath and keep it holy, I pray that you take time regularly for sabbath rest so that you remember all that’s important in your life. I’m looking forward to a time of renewal and reflection as I rest and read the remainder of this fabulous book that has already spoken loudly to me.
Honoring God’s gift of sabbath,
Dawn

MODERATOR’S REPORT
There's lots of exciting things going on at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)! The next board meeting is Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at 7:00 pm. Come see what's going on in the life of the church!
If you missed worship with us when the Worship Arts Camp participants conducted the worship service, you really missed a joyful, blessed, and meaningful service. To see the children's faces and the congregation's response was amazing!
Have you noticed the plastic tubs on the steps in the foyer? In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, we've cut back on printing, etc. and will be taking your old papers and plastic for recycling on a regular basis. Feel free to "fill 'em up" and help be good stewards of the environment!

DISCIPLES WOMEN’S NEWS
So, what do I have to talk about? Is there anything going on with the women of the church… Hmm…oh, yes, the DWM fall retreat! This is the last reminder about the retreat that is scheduled for September 24-26, 2010. I think the final count of FCC Burnet women going to retreat this year will be 11.
Please pray that we have a great weekend filled with inspirational keynotes, great music, and much fun and fellowship. We will miss those who couldn’t be with us this year.

DISCIPLES MEN NEWS
Summer is about gone and we will be starting our Saturday fellowship breakfast meetings soon. In September, we will meet on the second Saturday due to Regional Retreat being the weekend of the third Saturday. Mark your calendars for September the 11th at 8:00am in the fellowship hall. In October, we will return to our third Saturday breakfasts. Remember all men of the Church are welcome and please bring a guest.
There is a special work day at the camp in Gonzales this month on the 26th and 27th. If you can go and help with some special projects, let me or Chuck Orr know and we will arrange transportation for you. The work projects are a great time to meet other men form the area and enjoy fellowship as we work.
We possibly have six men attending the Regional Retreat in Brownwood this year, September 17-19, which is the most from this Church in quite some time. If you are interested in going, there is still time and we can make the arrangements. If you are a first timer to go to Retreat, the Men’s Group will pay your fee. Contact me or Chuck Orr if you are interested.
It’s a blessing to be part of a great bunch of men serving God and First Christian Church Burnet through service and fellowship.
Ron Rosignol President
The Fellowship of Church Women will meet at First United Methodist Church on Monday, August 30, at 2:00pm for a program and fellowship.

While Pastor Dawn is on vacation August 30 – September 11, please contact your Elders with any pastoral care concerns. They will be happy to assist you.
Bring your best smiles! Olan Mills Photo-graphy is coming to FCC on September 28th and 29th, from 2:00-9:20pm both days. They will take all members pictures and gather information needed to create a new church directory. Please plan to be there!
REMINDER
There will be NO DEACON MEETING for the month of September.
IN THE MAIL BAG….
In a recent letter to Mary Alice, Emma Dene Dromgoole (a former member who now lives in Jacksonville) included these words…
“The Hispanic group that used our church so long and some of your church guys that helped build a new church for them did a wonderful thing. They have a nice little church, a van and parking lot full on Sundays. I thought your church men would like to know about God’s Work!”
Great work, guys!

New members,
longtime members,
the curious and
inquiring minds . . .
this just might be for you!
Did you know that The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is part of a movement that began on the American Frontier in the early 1800's? Have you ever wondered why we use both "The Christian Church" and "(Disciples of Christ)" in our name? Do you know why a red chalice with a cross on it is our logo? Join Pastor Dawn for a 4-week series on The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as we learn together about our founders, history, beliefs, and current ministry initiatives as "a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world." Classes begin on September 23rd with two opportunities: Thursdays at 2:00pm or Sundays at 5:00pm.
We wish to extend sympathy to the family of Ann McElroy. Thank you to everyone who provided food and helped at the luncheon following her funeral.
If you have taken photos in the past two months, the FCC Burnet scrapbook is calling out to you to help fill it’s pages. Thanks to everyone who has shared pictures and newspaper articles for the first half of 2010 – those pages are now on display. Our scrapbook is just brimming with goodness! Please check it out.

Worship Arts Camp
A huge, heartfelt “thank you” goes out to the leaders and volunteers who made our second annual Worship Arts Camp a success. We had an average of 35 children who were ready to learn about God and worship. I hope all of you were blessed by the special worship service. It was the culmination of the week’s activities, meant as a gift to God and the congregation. My hope and prayer is that you received that gift from our children and youth. Listed below are the volunteers who helped with the camp and the Sunday School Rally breakfast:
Chaz Allison, Courtney Castillo, Sharon Childers, Bennie and Susan Clark, Zac Darling, Stephanie Haggerton, Mandee Harris, Paula Harris, Nancy Henderson, James Johnson, Victoria Johnson, Ann Knight, Oletha Miller, Jim and Lisa Nance, Chuck and Laura Orr, Ron and Marilyn Petrick, Dale and Judy Ritchie, Ron and Dawn Rosignol, Auda and Mary Alice Ross, Ernie and Peggy Spiekermann, Sharon Tippie, Greg and Brenda Williams
Adult Sunday School Classes
The adult Sunday School classes are meeting as one group for a six-week series on world religion. Chuck Orr is coordinating the lessons and all are still welcome! The group meets in the parlor at 9:30am each Sunday.
FCC – Friends Claiming Christ
There are three FCC meetings this fall before we take a break for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. We have changed the ages to 6-14, with the opportunity for our high school youth to participate as leaders when they are available. Our focus for this group is to strengthen the children’s relationship with God through hands-on activities that tie directly in with scripture readings. Pastor Dawn has graciously volunteered to work with the children each time with the hand chimes. We encourage everyone to bring a friend. If you would like to volunteer your time or help provide or serve dinner, please let me know.

Thanks to those who could be present and giving of your time. Continue your prayers for a clear vision of the future of the church and be looking for an official statement soon!
